Dr. Kizza Besigye, 51, was born in 1956 in Rwakabengo, Rukungiri. He graduated from Makerere University with a degree in Human Medicine. In 1980, at 24-years of age Besigye joined the Uganda Patriotic Movement (UPM).

In 1981, Dr Besigye was arrested on suspicion of supporting the National Resistance Army (NRA) rebellion. He was detained and tortured for several weeks before escaping to Nairobi , Kenya , where he joined Agakhan Hospital as a medical doctor. >>
